Addiction can hold a firmer grip than many realize, making the journey to sobriety challenging. For some, traditional addiction therapy alone isn’t sufficient. There is no shame in seeking additional support, and that is where medication-assisted treatment (MAT) can make a significant difference.
What is Medication-Assisted Treatment?
At MHS Behavioral Health, an outpatient clinic, we offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help individuals break free from chemical addiction to narcotics. MAT involves the use of safer, non-habit-forming medications to support recovery. This approach, combined with professional supervision, provides a safe and effective pathway to overcome addiction.
MAT with Buprenorphine
One of the medications used in MAT is Buprenorphine. This opioid helps patients avoid the severe symptoms of detoxing. By carefully controlling and gradually reducing the dosage, patients can eliminate their addiction without the abrupt challenges of going ‘cold turkey.’ Many find success with Buprenorphine, especially when previous attempts at recovery have failed.
MAT with Naltrexone
Naltrexone is another powerful tool in MAT, particularly for those who have ceased substance abuse but struggle to stay substance-free. Reduce cravings and decrease the effects of substances if patients relapse. This dual approach decreases both the desire and motivation to revert to old habits, making it easier to maintain sobriety.
Beyond Detox: Continuing Treatment with Vivitrol and Suboxone
After completing detox, rehab, and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), maintaining sobriety can still be challenging. Medications like Vivitrol and Suboxone play a crucial role in this phase.
- Vivitrol: This extended-release form of Naltrexone is administered monthly by injection. It helps prevent relapse by blocking the euphoric and sedative effects of opioids and alcohol, making it easier to stay on the path to recovery.
- Suboxone: A combination of bupropion and naloxone, suboxone helps manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings, making it easier for patients to remain in remission.
Ease of Access to Treatment
Accessing MAT may be challenging, thanks to telehealth services. Patients can receive consultations and follow-up care from the comfort of their homes, eliminating barriers to treatment. Additionally, urine drug tests, essential to monitoring recovery can be conveniently completed at the LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics locations.
Seeking Help
If you or someone you know needs additional support to overcome addiction, consider asking about MAT. It might be the crucial step required to achieve a lasting recovery. Contact MHS Behavioral Health to learn more about how MAT can be the final piece of your recovery puzzle.
